What is an Anole?

Any of about 200 species of lizards in the large arboreal (tree-dwelling) genus Anolis, family Iguanidae (suborder Sauria). The most familiar anole (A. carolinensis, or green anole, commonly but erroneously called a chameleon) is native to the southern United States and islands in the Caribbean.
